|Summer Fest Recap
Price of admittance for ALL the shows: 30$
Bands and Artists seen and comments:
Van Halen: Great to see Diamond Dave back with the Van Halen family, will go see them again if they tour and buy any new albums they release
Friends of Crimson King: mix of Adrian Belew Power Trio and California Trio. They gave a show that was a bit too pink floydy for me and not enough experimental. They were at their best when all 7 musicians were on stage.
Primus: My best show. Les Claypool knows how to keep a crowd in a show and baffle you with the ease that he strokes that bass. Unfukingbelievable.
Charle Aznavour: Fresh crooner legend. Had to go see him if just to see that I was there. Too mellow for me, left halfway. Didn't help that Zappa playing Zappa was playing just beside us and that the music and crowd were drowing our show.
Priestess: My surprise. Good solid rock band from Montreal. Bunch of long haired hillbillies that used cow bell, what's not to like?
Stone Temple Pilots: Despite bad reviews, sound, Scott Weiland being completely trashed and starting 10 minutes late, they still delivered and Scott sung through all the hits without missing a beat or collapsing. Anyone thinking they would get blown away like STp would delived in the late 90's shouldn't have come.
Musical Box: Scariest show I've ever seen. This Quebec City cover band recreates the 1973 Genesis show that took place in Montreal at the forum, with the same costume, set and discussion (including the fake english accent) with the audience. Despite excellent sound and great musicians, I really didn't like it. I'm not a fan of cover bands or impersonnators (which was basically what this was). And watchinga guy pretend he's PEter Gabriel pretending to be a bat, dung beatle and old man just isn't my thing.
Atreyu: California band with two multiple singers à la Linkin Park. Solid show, nothing to complain about.
Silverstein: Typical modern rock band from Ontario. They were alright, too much screaming.
Linkin Park: Great show despite the rain and bad sound. IÈm not a big fan of the band but htey give a memorable perfrormance
Average cost per act: 3$

|This is a rant, not an update....
So, I work in a university hospital research centre where most of the staff has a certain number of years of formal "higher" education. So, you'd figure that all this time spent in books and around supposedly cultivated people would give them a certain knowledge of basic human manners. But not. It just took me a trip to three different floors and 6 different stalls to find one that wasn't covered in piss or shit (or both in 2 instances), that was flushed and not clogged by 3 tons of toilet paper.

|I've been a good little citizen for too long...
...that it's getting on my nerves. I look around me these days and feel that a lot of people just don't get it: municipal and provincial governments getting stuck on small details and nobody looking at the bigger issues, 8 month old pregnant women smoking right outside the CHUL's maternity ward, people driving like they are the only ones on the street, people walking around in their bubbles and expecting others to step out of their way. Well, I'm sick of stepping aside, I'm at the point where I want to stand my ground and scream "HEY, BUDDY! WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING FUCKTARD!" at them to get them out of their stupor. I nearly ran over a pedestrian a few weeks ago 'cause she decided that it was ok to cross the street in front of a bus on my green light while I was coasting at 60 km/h! I honked my horn, jammed the brakes missed her by a hair, got out of the car and proceeded to chew her head off so that she would never do it again.
Fucking humans, why can't we all be cats and live a life of naps and croquettes...?
Nick needs a good Dark Wave night, concert, or night in a big city to get his funk out.
Turning sanity back on now,

|F$@#%@# online grant submission system...
I have to enter the itemized budget for my grant online and the stupid site has been down on and off for the past 4 days. They extended the deadline from Thursday to Friday, but everyone is panicking and hitting the site and making it crash again. I'll friggin' explode if the site is not up tomorrow morning...
Now I got for Peanut Butter M&Ms...
And maybe a soda.

|I am a Plumbing and Electrician God
I have installed and trouble shot my dishwasher in less than two evenings. No leaks, no electrical wires, no cats stuck inside.
I accept new disciples now.
Tonite: Fix leaky faucet.
Bring it on!!!

|Much needed update...
I looked at my earlier posts (circa 2001-2002) and saw how much I wrote back then and was pretty amazed. I also noticed that some of you have been around for that long, it was quite touching.
Anyways, thought I'd give you an update on things.
First off, I'm still busy writing grants. I'm officially an Assistant professor in 4 days so that will be what I will be doing for the most part for the rest of my career, but I'm up to it. I feel revitalized and ready to tackle on the summer of work. The big downer is that MJ will be traveling since she has a lot of time off, but she understands. She'll be gone close to the grant submission deadlines, so it will be a blessing for her not to see me in my grumpy stressed out mood.
Secondly, we are in the process of moving into our new loft. The place is amazing and I will be posting pics as soon as we get everything moved in. I just bought a 16:9 aspect ratio 100 in projection screen for Wii'ing, DDR'ing and watching some flicks. Disco ball soon to come. Our loft warming party will be a blast, I can tell you. I also noticed that there is a pretty decent microbrew dépanneur 2 blocks away so good beer will always flow.
Thirdsies, I'm meeting up with an obstetrician for possible collaborations this afternoon. If I dive into clinical research it will be pretty cool. Will give me a good chance to explore the human aspect of my research.
Other than that, I'm doing pretty good. Still need to get my butt in gear and in better shape. When I was reading some previous entries in my LJ I saw that I could run 5 km with a bad cold back then... need to get back in that shape again.
Well, hope this entry is a bit more coherent than some of my last ones. Talk to y'all later.

There's this new post-doc (that is, a person that has gotten a PhD in Science, this is important) in a colleague's lab that just asked me if there was a special room in the lab where he could store some samples at 15-25 degrees Celsius (about 65-72 F) for an hour...
I told him that his boss's office was probably in that range and that he should ask him permission to put the samples there...

WTF happened to the month of MAY?!
To add to things:
-Going to Ottawa this weekend to give moral support to MJ.
-Going to in 3 weeks for the most fantastic wedding -EVER-.
-Moving into a loft in 5 weeks so I need to start packing our 7 and a half.
-Opening my lab in 6 weeks so I need to figure out who will give me money.
